Data Center East

The Challenge

In 2006, Honeywell had more than 200 computer room facilities and were looking to modernize through their Data Center East project in Delaware. Their objective was to provide load sharing and fail over support for existing data centers while also creating the infrastructure that would allow for migration, consolidation and, more importantly, capacity growth.

The IES Solution

Honeywell considered a bid to meet aggressive scheduling and to ensure cost savings. First, they called IES. We worked collaboratively with Honeywell's data voice and network teams to help design the cable plant infrastructure for the project, including:

1. Needs assessment
2. Information gathering and requirements assessment
3. Space and capacity planning
4. Product specification
5. Budgeting
6. Schedule and resource planning
7. Project plan delivery, build specifications and drawings, and elevations

All requirements were performed to Honeywell's complete satisfaction. After the extensive design process, Honeywell chose to negotiate with ies rather than put the project out to bid. IES managed and staffed the project, overseeing the local union technicians, providing training, project management, and quality and cost oversight.

The Results

The project was completed on budget and on time, allowing Honeywell to meet its objectives. IES currently maintains the onsite presence to support growth, mac work and other projects at this data center. we also support the majority of Honeywell's data center projects across the U.S.

Memorial Hospital Women and Children's Tower

The Challenge

Memorial Hospital has been an integral part of the Colorado Springs community for more than 100 years. As the community needs have grown, the campus was beginning to fall behind in space and modernization requirements. Mindful of customer needs, Memorial embarked on a new five-story women and children's tower consisting of six round pods per floor, each pod complete with patient rooms and a nursing station. The project was designed to give Memorial the ability to serve its customers faster and more efficiently. adding to the challenge was the decision to add two floors after construction began.

The IES Solution

IES Commercial was engaged to provide electrical services for the 277,000 square foot hospital that included radiology, nine labor delivery recovery postpartum "LDRP" rooms, two c-section rooms, a ped op room, neo-natal intensive care unit rooms, pre-natal intensive care unit rooms and EM services. As plans and conditions changed during the project, IES adapted and provided innovative solutions to keep the project on track.

As the round layout of the building provided space challenges, IES built and prefabricated branch circuitry off-site to minimize job-site congestion. HCF cable built off-site was also utilized to reduce cost and installation time. This, together with the other prefab materials used, decreased congestion on-site by allowing IES to reduce the number of electricians needed on-site, minimize material clutter and work more efficiently within the building layout.

Safety concerns also provided an additional challenge on this project and were addressed during daily preconstruction planning meetings. As this was an expansion, in addition to ensuring the safety of the IES team and other construction teams' on-site, special precautions were taken to avoid contamination while working around occupied patient care areas by maintaining infection control systems.

The Results

While the design changed and plans were updated, the grand opening date did not change. IES worked diligently to safely deliver the project on time, working over 133,000 man-hours without logging a single recordable incident or injury. The grand opening was a success, and the women and children's center is now a valuable addition to the Colorado Springs community.

Buffalo Bear Wind Farm

The Challenge

How do you harness power in a hard-to-reach place? Actually, Buffalo Bear isn't hard to reach, it's just off the beaten path. Northeast Oklahoma, however, has a very good wind regime that blows harder than in other parts of the country. EMG was challenged with developing and deploying a wind farm in this remote location. This included securing electrical expertise to install and grid-tie this renewable power project.

EMG is one of the nation's leading owners and operators of competitive electric power generation. It owns and operates 44 power generating facilities in 14 states that sell more than 10,000 megawatts of electricity to competitive wholesale markets and to utilities.

The IES Solution

IES went to work to help bring nine turbines, each capable of generating 2.1 megawatts of electricity at peak wind speeds on line in a remote location. We assembled and deployed an experienced team to a remote location. Our experts were able to safely install and commission this wind farm, now serving more than 5,000 homes with a clean, renewable energy source.

The Results

The project is online and providing power for the Western Farmers Electric Cooperative. IES was able to deliver safely and on time, in spite of the need to relocate and manage a team of electricians and technicians.

Villa Trieste Solar Neighborhood

The Challenge

Pulte Homes, looking to extend their industry-leading customer-satisfaction scores, sought to build the first residential development in the Southwest portion of the United States to provide as standard a combination of solar power, LEED certification and Environments for Living (EFL) building methods. This required the electrical contractor to install both solar panels and smart meters for each home in the community.

IES has installed more residential electrical systems than anyone in the U.S. We collaborated with Pulte to understand their systems and objectives and fully trained our electricians and technicians on the complete solar system. As an expert electrician, we were able to engineer an efficient electrical system for the neighborhood.

the results

IES is providing electrical contracting services for all 185 homes in the neighborhood, including all supporting electrical systems, rooftop solar panel arrays and smart meter installation and connection. The system uses a high-efficiency solar cell to convert sunlight, an inverter to create electricity grid-connected, constant monitoring smart meters.
